Silver Mountain Experience

In the 1860s north Cardiganshire resembled the Klondike

Set in the beautiful Cambrian Mountains of Mid Wales, the Silver Mountain Experience takes visitors on an atmospheric journey back to the 18th century when silver was mined in them there hills.

During the boom of the 1860s the whole of north Cardiganshire resembled the Klondike, attracting speculators and adventurers from across the globe, but the mining of silver-rich lead was a major industry in Mid Wales for almost 2000 years.

An authentic silver mine, Llywernog was saved from dereliction in 1973 and is now a seven-acre adventure park that offers an informative and adventurous day out for all the family whatever the weather.

Just 15 minutes from Aberystwyth, the award-wining site features an underground tour, working waterwheels, machinery and tramways and a panning shed for you to work the mine material for minerals.

The attractions include the ‘Miners’ Trail’ footpath which connects the natural and man-made features of the site. From the giant waterwheel you can work your way around the mine offices, explore the shafts and finish off at the mining exhibition, which charts the history of the mine from 1742.

The mine’s history is brought to life in a 45-minute guided tour where visitors can see the mine in all its glory and hear about the miners who worked there long ago.

There are also various actor-led experiences for children of all ages - such as the ‘Dragon’s Tale, ‘Earthquake Zone’, ‘Black Chasm’ and ‘Time Lab’ - in this imaginative all-weather attraction that includes colourful indoor exhibitions and the best collection of silver-lead mining artefacts in Wales.

Younger members of the family can also be let loose to experience the magic of ‘Woo Hoo Wood’and explore the tunnels where the ‘Grovels’ dwell.

Whether creating dens in the trees, building dams in the stream or playing with waterwheels in the ‘Silver River’ play area there is plenty to do for all the family.
