Anglesey’s Hidden Gardens

Plas Cadnant

Award-winning restoration project at Plas Cadnant Estate

Situated between Menai Bridge and Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey, the Hidden Gardens is an award-winning project to restore the grounds of the 200-acre Plas Cadnant Estate.

Work started on restoring the grounds in 1997, with the first stage being to rescue the house and lodges, dating back to the early 19th century, after 70 years of neglect and to carefully restore the outbuildings and gardener's cottage using traditional techniques and materials.

But since then the Hidden Gardens have undergone a dramatic transformation with large parts of the estate being restored to their former glory.

Three different gardens have been uncovered, including an unusual walled garden with curving walls and pool, a secret valley garden with three waterfalls and river, and an upper woodland garden with stone outcrops and the remains of a 19th century folly.

The two-acre walled garden with its pool, leads on to valley gardens planted with a huge array of interesting and rare specimens. Spring features camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons and vibrant bulb displays; while in the summer the herbaceous borders are a fantastic sight.

Late season brings lovely hydrangeas in many different forms, which are set off by the interesting topiary.

With the River Cadnant flowing through the estate the valley garden features dramatic rock formations, with picturesque waterfalls to discover.

The estates Grade II-listed outbuildings have been transformed into five individual self-catering cottages, sympathetically restored to create a small group of stylish, well-equipped living spaces situated at the end of a long leafy drive around a spacious courtyard.
