Six days of great ales in Chelmsford

Chelmsford Summer Beer & Cider Festival

Festival taking place for 39th year

One of the biggest events in the Chelmsford social calendar kicks off at midday today at Admiral's Park, Rainsford Road.

Boasting 300 different real ales and more than 100 types of cider and perry, the Chelmsford Summer Beer and Cider Festival runs from Tuesday, 4 July, to Saturday, 8 July.

This year is the 39th annual festival and brewers taking part include Bishop Nick, Wibblers Brewery, Felstar Brewery, Brentwood Brewing, Round Tower Brewery, Nethergate Brewery and Skinners Brewery of Cornwall.

Visitors who don't like beer will be able to sample a range of ciders, perries, wines and prosecco and organisers make sure all beers can be served in third, half or full pint glasses so people can try as many different tipples as they choose.

There will be live music throughout the festival from acts such as folk duo Silbury Hill, acoustic covers band Charlie Duo, American roots act The Curst Sons and indie band Adrenalin.

There are some special events planned for 2017 too including a food pairing masterclass created by Warren Geragthy, the executive head chef at the Galvin Green Man in Essex. Visitors who sign up will be able to sample four beverages with a food sampler.

The Saturday will be the family fun day, running from 12-6pm which will include extra activities for children including games, rides and activities.

The festival is free to enter before 5pm today, Wednesday and Thursday. Admission after 5pm on these days is £2, as is entry before 5pm on Friday and Saturday.

Entry after 5pm on Friday and Saturday is £5. Glass hire is £3 at all times and the event is free to CAMRA members.
