Six Scots book Glasgow tickets

Muir out to do the double on home soil

After a thrilling weekend of qualifying action at the British Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham last weekend, there will be at least six Scots competing on home soil in Glasgow when the European Athletics Indoor Championships get underway on 1 March 2019.

Laura Muir, Chris O’Hare, Zoey Clark, Neil Gourley and Jemma Reekie all booked their tickets to compete on home soil through their winning performances in Birmingham, while a host of other big names, including defending European indoor 60m champion Asha Philip, did what they needed to do to confirm their participation.

Glasgow 2019 ambassador Muir put in a dominant defence of her 3000m title in Birmingham, declaring her intent to defend both European indoor titles on home soil in the process, with the 1500m the other target.

“We’re hoping to do the double, that’s what we’d like to do,” said Muir. “To wear the orange bib as defending champion for two events is really exciting for me and I’m excited for the championships after that performance.

“I feel so comfortable indoors in Glasgow, I know the surroundings and I’m in great form. I think the double sounds pretty nice to me. If it was anywhere other than Glasgow, I might not have done it but it’s my hometown.”

Training partners O’Hare and Andrew Butchart went toe-to-toe in the 3000m with O’Hare edging out his compatriot to take the title and they could well battle it out again in Scotland next month after team selection is finalised on Sunday.

Both 1500m events were also won by Scots with Gourley winning the men’s title with an indoor personal best of 3:44.76s, ahead of Elliot Giles, and 20-year-old Reekie, Muir’s training partner, taking the women's event with a powerful kick finish to cross the line in 4:17.08s.

“I really wanted to be in Glasgow,” said the European junior champion, set to line up against Muir in Glasgow. "Laura is the best in the world and every day I am challenging her."

In one of the highlights of the weekend in Birmingham, Clark claimed the 400m title against a star-studded field that also featured Olympic medallist Eilidh Doyle, World Championship silver medallist Laviai Nielsen and international Meghan Beesley.

“It’s amazing to book my place in Glasgow, every opportunity I can get to run in Scotland, I’m going to grab it,” said Clark. “I’m so delighted I’m going to be there to experience that atmosphere.”

Guy Learmonth was the sixth Scot to book his place in Glasgow after he was bumped up to silver after a disqualification in the 800m.

The European Athletics Indoor Championships take place from 1-3 March and with Butchart, Doyle and Lynsey Sharp all still within a shout of making the British team, there could be nine Scots representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland on home soil in Glasgow.
