Abergavenny Festival of Cycling

Monmouthshire challenge for cyclists

The Abergavenny Festival of Cycling begins this weekend with four events on Saturday and the Junior National Series Road Race on Sunday .

The Sportives taking place on Saturday include the Monmouthshire 20 leisure ride, the Monmouthshire Sportif 40, the Iron Mountain 70, and the Iron Mountain 100, with the weekend's action forming the precursor to the Town Centre Races on 7 July.

The Monmouthshire 20 takes place over the flat lands of the Usk Valley and makes for a leisurely ride with a stop at the Black Bear Bettws Newydd; while the Monmouthshire Sportif takes place over a shorter route than last year but retains a challenging ride around north Monmouthshire.

The route follows the undulating roads of the iconic Rolls Estate before descending into the Monnow Valley and climbing out through the historic village of Grosmont to meander back over the rolling roads to Abergavenny.

The Iron Mountain 70 follows the route of the Monmouthshire Sportif before tackling the Iron Mountain and Llangynidr Moors and then descending into Llangattock and returning to Abergavenny.

Finally the Iron Mountain 100 completes the route around Monmouthshire, with climbs over the Tumble before heading over the Llangynidr Moors and descending into Llangynidr. The race continues through Talybont, Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn and Llangorse before climbing the Dragons Back and descending into Abergavenny via Crickhowell.

A fortnight later the Wales Open Criterium, comprising the Traders and Elite races, concludes the festival along with a series of support races
