Tramlines on track for Sheffield celebration

Tramlines Festival

Primal Scream bonanza at the Ponderosa

Featuring 73 acts across five stages in the heart of Sheffield, Tramlines takes over the city's parkland, bars and music venues for a weekend of live music and club nights from 21-23 July 2017.

A multi-genre city festival organised by a selection of local promoters, organisations and venues, the event includes artists from the worlds of rock, indie, hip-hop, house, techno and more, showcasing the region's most creative and diverse musical talents.

Named after the city's tram network, the festival is now in its ninth year and is Sheffield's longest-running inner-city music festival. In 2016 it attracted more than 100,000 people.

Musically, Tramlines has stayed on the new wave side of cool and blends in all kinds of musical genres, but expect the majority of the names on the bill to be contemporary stars as opposed to classic.

The festival gives music lovers a chance to see established artists alongside up-and-coming acts and this year's event will take place across three main outdoor stages... the Ponderosa, Devonshire Green and the Folk Forest in Endcliffe Park.

The Libertines top the Ponderosa stage on Friday night, with Primal Scream the headliners on Saturday and Metronomy on Sunday. On the Devonshire Green stage it's Kano on Friday followed by All Saints and The Coral on Saturday and Sunday.

The Folk Forest opens on Saturday with Cate Le Bon, while Sunday's headliner is Omar Souleyman.

Lady Leshurr brings her unmissable, high-energy live show to Sunday's main stage for what promises to be a highlight of 2017's festival, while dance-hall duo The Heatwave appear on Tramlines' brand-new Into The Trees area in Ponderosa Park.

Local DJ Leroy, hip-hop promoters Thirsty Ear and the crew behind Sheffield's bass music radio station UK Mondo all join the Into The Trees lineup, with Don Letts and The Reflex also performing.

More emerging talent comes from the new PRS Momentum tent, which will take pride of place alongside the newly-reinstated stage in Devonshire Green. Rapper Ms Banks and The Big Moon side-project Our Girl join the bill, which already features hotly-tipped emerging artists such as Bossy Love, Flamingods, Mista Silva and Jerry Williams.

Local talent is well represented on the new stage too, with Sheffield's jazz-inspired surf-pop band Katie Pham & The Moonbathers also new to the bill.

Indie rockers Primal Scream headline the main stage on Saturday night. Originally formed in 1982, they were a key part of the mid-1980s indie pop scene, eventually taking on more psychedelic and then garage influences, before incorporating a dance music element to their sound.

Grime legend and Mercury nominee Kano heads up Friday's bill at the newly revamped Devonshire Green stage, while Saturday's line-up includes the brilliant Spring King, Estrons and Alvarez Kings.

Alongside the big names on the bills, Tramlines has long held a reputation for championing the best emerging talent, and this year is set to be no different. A host of Sheffield and South Yorkshire artists include the likes of Liberty Ship, The SSS, Luxury Death, Logs and rapper Matic Mouth.
